"In 1599 the Globe Theatre was built in London, England, for the acting company of William Shakespeare. The theater became famous because Shakespeare’s plays were put on there. Indeed, Shakespeare designed many of his plays—including Hamlet, Othello, King Lear, Macbeth, Twelfth Night, and All’s Well That Ends Well—for performance in the Globe Theatre. Although the Globe was torn down in the 17th century, a replica of the theater was built in the late 20th century."

"When the Globe Theatre opened in 1997 with a production of William Shakespeare's Henry V, it was one of the newest theaters in London. But in a way, it is really one of the oldest. The Globe is a replica of the theater where many of Shakespeare's plays were first performed. Today's Globe stands only 200 feet away from the site of the original Globe, and is the closest that modern-day theatergoers can get to experiencing a play as Shakespeare intended."

"Yeats' lines on Shakespeare's greatest characters are now literally true again at the place they originated: the Globe theater in London, site of the premieres of the playwright's major masterworks. This September a new Globe opens for business. But this did not occur without criticism and cries of "Disneyland on the Thames."

An international band of scholars have worked hard to ensure that the new theater resembles as closely as possible the old one for which Shakespeare wrote his masterworks. When the project first began, critics thought that such authenticity was impossible. Now, some regard such authenticity itself as a threat."
