What is Paleontology?

Mary Anning

张弥曼 Zhang Miman

Zhang Miman is an expert in fish fossils, and has spent much time studying those in river basins of Yunnan Province.

She studied in Moscow for her first (undergraduate) degree, and then completed her doctorate (PhD) at Stockholm University in Sweden.

Now 84 years-old, she still works at the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology in Beijing. Zhang is very interested in fish evolution, including how fish went from see to land. She has written many academic papers and books, including one about Late Mesozoic fish fossils of Zhejiang Province, China. Many different specimens have been named after her, including a fish called Meemannia (an extinct fish of clade Sarcopterygii) and a small dinosaur called Sinovenator changii.

Zhang is not interested in being famous, and tends to avoid the spotlight. She has won many awards including the L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Awards in 2018, and many honorary doctorates.
